Meet Han Dong
Scarborough holds a very special place in Han’s story. When he arrived in Toronto with his family in 1990, Scarborough was their first home.
Growing up, he worked the night shift at his parents’ 24-hour coffee shop at the corner of Lawrence and Markham Road. Meeting people from all walks of life, he developed a deep appreciation for the diversity that makes this community so vibrant.
Han learned that no matter where you come from or what language you speak, family and community are essential values that define and motivate him.
Scarborough’s diversity, resilience, and strong neighbourhood spirit shaped his understanding of public service and community leadership—and those values continue to guide him today.
A Foundation of Service
Han’s journey into politics began in 1997 at the federal level, when he volunteered on the Hon. Maria Minna’s election campaign. After her victory, he was hired as a part-time staff member in her constituency office.
Working with Maria also gave him the chance to meet with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien—an experience that deepened his understanding of public service.

In 2005, Han moved to Queen’s Park to work for longtime Ontario Liberal cabinet minister the Hon. Gerry Phillips, serving for more than 7 years.

His roles included MPP liaison and community outreach across multiple ministries, including the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Government Services, giving him a strong foundation in how government can work for people.

A Record of Service and Results
For nearly two decades, Han has served communities across Toronto. In 2014, he was elected to public office for the first time as the MPP for Trinity–Spadina (2014–2018), and he later served as the MP for Don Valley North (2019–2025).
In Ottawa, he was on the Human Resources and Skills Development Committee, advocating for working families, seniors, and youth across Canada.
Throughout his career, he has championed practical solutions that improve people’s daily lives—from passing the Reliable Elevators Act to introducing legislation to license home inspectors, protecting homebuyers across Ontario.
Family
Han lives with his wife, Sophie, their two children, Emma and Matthew and their two extra-large Newfoundland dogs, Cici and Bobo.
His family is a constant reminder of why he serves—to build a better future for the next generation.

Han understands the challenges facing Scarborough North—affordability, housing, public safety, transit, and access to community services. He believes Scarborough North deserves experienced leadership and a strong voice at City Hall.
He will leverage his experience across all levels of government to attract investment, create jobs, and make City Hall more accountable to taxpayers. He is committed to working with residents to build safer neighbourhoods, improve local services, and help the community thrive.
